Environment Policy

As farmers and landowners we have been brought up to believe that we are merely caretakers of the land for future generations. For this reason a legal covenant was placed on 700+ acres of native forest on the family farms. The covenanted land can never be deforested and has been fenced to prevent farm animals from eating seedling trees and preventing forest regeneration.

We also undertake active control of non-native animal pests (rats, weasels, stoats, possums and magpies) that threaten our native forests and native birds. The garden at Kamahi is extensively planted with native and exotic species to attract New Zealand native nectar feeders (eg. Tui and Bellbirds). Native berried trees are also a food source for our native pigeon, the Kereru.

Our environmental initiatives:

  • We have installed solar-powered hot water.
  • Kamahi Cottage was built of Cupressus macrocarpa, a locally sourced, untreated and renewable timber source. All the interior joinery and flooring is also from non-native, locally sourced and renewable timber sources.
  • We recycle all glass, paper, tins, aluminium and plastic containers.
  • We don’t stock bottled water, because we have superb drinking water pumped from a nearby farm-forest stream and micro-filtered for your safety.
  • We dry our laundry in the open air whenever possible to save energy.
  • All cleaning is done using environmentally-friendly products.
  • We shop locally to support our small town businesses and to reduce our car mileage.
  • Our beef and lamb is ethically farmed, free-range, fully grass-fed and professionally processed by our local butcher.
  • Our own orchard supplies unsprayed fruit in season, all conserves are home-grown and we use as little pre-processed food as possible.
  • We dehydrate and freeze surplus fruit and use it during the rest of the year in preserves and compotes. Windfall plums are gathered by Evan and distilled into superb plum schnapps.
  • All menus are designed with seasonal cuisine in mind – we believe food is best eaten fresh and locally sourced where possible.
  • Try our cakes and biscuits – they’re all home-made too.
  • We live on a beautiful farm (1120 acres; approximately 450 hectares) in a wonderful part of New Zealand. You’re very welcome to walk over the family farm.

There are ways you can help:

  • There is a large recycling casket at Kamahi for any glass, plastic, paper, tin and aluminium you’d like to dispose of. Consider reusing your towels for a second day. (Most of our guests already do this, because it helps reduce water usage and cuts down on the amount of detergents entering our waterways).
  • Drink our micro-filtered water instead of buying bottled water. We supply refillable, re-useable water bottles. If you are out for the day, just fill the bottles with fresh tap water to take with you. The complimentary lemon syrup concentrate in the cottage fridge (just dilute it with plenty of fresh water and add ice) is made from our own home-grown unsprayed lemons.
  • To conserve water, consider tuning off the tap while brushing your teeth and shortening your showering time.
  • For any local supermarket shopping, please take the green ‘enviro’ shopping bags supplied to save using plastic bags.
  • Visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park. The park is operated by the Otorohanga Kiwi House Charitable Trust, a non-profit group devoted to the preservation of our endangered native birds and reptiles. They also have an active education and advocacy role and work closely with New Zealand’s Department of Conservation. You might like to take out an annual membership to help them with their conservation efforts. The Kiwi House staff would be thrilled to discuss this option with you!
