“Heaven on a New Zealand Hilltop”

“We’re not sure where to start in our review of Kamahi Cottage. We have now stayed there twice, separated by twelve years, and adore the place more than ever. In fact, it just might be the best B&B experience we’ve ever had. While the cottage itself is truly special, both lovely and separated enough from the main house that you have privacy and seclusion if that is what you seek, it is the Cowans that make the B&B what it is. Liz is one of the kindest and most generous persons we have met in our travels around the world and Evan is a real pleasure as well. There seemed to be nothing that they wouldn’t do to make sure our stay was everything we wanted it to be. By the time we begrudgingly left the cottage, we were reminded that the Cowans seem more like family than hosts. We will always look forward to returning…”

“It doesn’t get any better than this!”

“We knew … that Kamahi Cottage would be charming. We had no idea it would be in such a gorgeous setting. Perched on a hillside, the view from the bedroom is amazing. The gardens are award worthy in and of themselves, and Elisabeth and Evan have thought of everything to make the visit very special. Elisabeth is an incredible chef, too – some of the best meals of our entire six weeks in NZ! It just doesn’t get any better than this. If there were six stars possible, Kamahi Cottage would get my vote for six stars!!!”

“Absolute Paradise!”

“My husband and I spent a couple of nights here during our Honeymoon traveling through New Zealand. Both of us would have been content to stay at Kamahi Cottage forever. Everything about that place is perfect, adorable and comfortable. The front porch was our favorite. We loved sitting in the hammock swings, drinking gin and tonics (made with a lemon picked fresh off of Liz’s lemon tree, of course), listening to the birds sing and Evan playing the bagpipes, and admiring the incredible views.

Liz is a wonderful cook (try the lemon pancakes–seriously!). She will either bring the meal to the cottage if you want a more intimate or private meal, or you are free to join her and Evan in their house. They are very welcoming and accommodating. Out of all 5 places we stayed across New Zealand, this was our favorite.”

“One night wasn’t enough!”

“We had a lovely night in the comfort of the secluded Kamahi Cottage. Liz has done a great job of thinking of all the finer details. The location is beautiful overlooking the rolling hills, and the freshly delivered breakfast was delicious, not to mention the chocolate treats awaiting us on arrival! We also really appreciated the complimentary bubbles to celebrate our honeymoon, very kind. ‎It’s great to know the efforts the family have gone to to make the cottage as green/eco-friendly as possible too. Highly recommended for a comfortable and romantic getaway.”

“An absolute gem!”

“Staying here was the highlight of the North Island for us. Liz is such a warm and gracious host, and waking up on that beautiful farm (we arrived late at night, which Liz was very accommodating about, so we didn’t know what our surroundings were until we woke up the next day) was like waking up in a Disney movie. The beautiful views are spectacular! The property is beyond lovely, and at one point their cat was chasing butterflies through the garden…it didn’t even feel real.

The home-cooked breakfast was mouth-wateringly delicious, and Liz had some wonderful recommendations for activities that day before we went to the Waitomo Glowworm caves, and also made dinner reservations for us that night. The cottage is quaint and very comfortable. They have wifi at the main house, not in the cottage, so you do either have to go outside and take a few steps into the garden, or they are very welcoming about coming into their home to use the wifi if you want to sit in their lovely living room with more spectacular views. :p

Our trip couldn’t have been better, thanks to Liz and the wonderful Kamahi cottage. We will be recommending this place to everyone for years to come!”

“Shouldn’t miss!”

“After a stressful day of driving on the left hand side of the road for the first time, words cannot express how wonderful it was to drive up to the cottage and realize that we were in the midst of a soothing garden with a most gracious host in Liz. The view was spectacular, the variety and color of the plants was intriguing, and the many birds calls added to the sense that we had arrived in paradise. Our bed was situated allowing us to look at the stars in a clear night sky. Liz’s famous breakfasts exceeded their reputation, as did her advice and knowledge of all things Kiwi. We would be remiss not to recommend Kamahi Cottage to friends and relatives travelling to NZ.”

“What a gem!”

“We stayed two nights at Kamahi Cottage- we were coming from a big hotel in Sydney so it was great to have our own little house in the country- the cottage is comfortable, pretty, well equipped and cozy- surrounded by beautiful gardens and a lovely lemon tree right outside our door. Our host Liz provided dinner our first night, since would be driving and arriving after eight- we had an absolutely delicious home cooked gourmet dinner- tomato soup, polenta, local NZ lamb which was great, nice veggies and chocolate cake. Breakfasts were outstanding as well, and the surrounding trails are spectacular for hikes.

Liz and her husband were terrific about suggesting places to visit and things to do, and it was so nice to come back to our cozy cabin. Liz made reservations for us at a great restaurant, and suggested we visit a local sheep farm called Hairy Feet where some of the Hobbit movie was filmed- both the restaurant and the farm were highlights of our trip that we would not have known about ourselves. Can’t recommend Kamahi highly enough, and hope to get back there in a few years.”
